ChatGPT Ads Reach $1 Billion: What This New Advertising Channel Means for Businesses

OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after launch. The platform is already being used by tens of thousands of advertisers, while self-service access is expanding across Europe, India, the Middle East, and North Africa.

This is more than another impressive technology milestone. It is evidence that conversational AI is quickly becoming a serious advertising channel—and potentially an important new part of the customer journey.

From AI Assistant to Advertising Platform

For several years, ChatGPT was primarily viewed as a productivity tool. People used it to write content, analyze information, learn new skills, generate ideas, and automate routine work.

That role is now expanding.

More than one billion people reportedly use ChatGPT every week. Many of them are not simply looking for information. They are comparing software, researching products, planning purchases, evaluating services, and deciding what to do next.

This creates a valuable environment for advertisers.

Google traditionally reaches customers when they enter a search query. Meta reaches them while they browse social content. ChatGPT can potentially reach them while they are actively explaining their goals, requirements, preferences, and limitations.

That makes conversational AI different from both traditional search advertising and social media advertising.

Why the $1 Billion Milestone Matters

Annualized revenue run rate is not the same as confirmed annual revenue. It measures how much revenue a business would generate over a year if its current pace continued.

However, reaching a $1 billion run rate in less than 200 days still demonstrates extremely rapid advertiser adoption.

Earlier in 2026, OpenAI introduced a self-service Ads Manager, allowing businesses to register, upload advertisements, set budgets and bids, manage campaigns, and review performance without working directly with a sales representative.

The company also added:

  • Cost-per-click advertising
  • Outcome-optimized bidding
  • Pixel-based conversion tracking
  • Conversions API integration
  • Product feeds
  • Geographic and platform targeting
  • Custom audiences
  • Campaign performance reporting

OpenAI says cost-per-click and outcome-optimized bidding now account for most campaigns on the platform.

These additions make ChatGPT Ads look less like an experimental placement and more like a developing performance-marketing ecosystem.

How ChatGPT Advertising Works

ChatGPT Ads are designed to appear when they are relevant to what a user is currently exploring.

For example, someone may ask ChatGPT to compare accounting platforms for a small business, find software for managing customer relationships, plan a home renovation, or choose equipment for a new company.

An advertiser offering a relevant product or service may be able to appear during that decision-making process.

According to OpenAI, advertisements are clearly labeled and displayed separately from ChatGPT’s answers. Advertising does not influence the answers generated by ChatGPT, and advertisers do not receive access to users’ private conversations.

The advertising system may use the context of the current conversation to select a relevant ad. Depending on the user’s location and privacy settings, it may also consider broader interests and preferences from their ChatGPT experience.

This distinction will be critical. The long-term success of conversational advertising depends on whether platforms can introduce commercial content without damaging the trust that made people use AI assistants in the first place.

Why Small Businesses Should Pay Attention

One of the most important details in OpenAI’s announcement is that small and medium-sized businesses already represent a meaningful share of its advertising business.

New advertising platforms often begin with large brands and agency-managed campaigns. Self-service access changes that by allowing smaller companies to test the platform with their own budgets, creative assets, and targeting strategies.

For small businesses, ChatGPT Ads may provide several opportunities:

  • Reaching customers while they are actively researching a solution
  • Entering a new channel before it becomes overcrowded
  • Testing demand outside Google and Meta
  • Connecting advertising with detailed customer intent
  • Introducing specialized products to highly relevant audiences
  • Reaching potential customers across multiple international markets

OpenAI reported that one ecommerce advertiser achieved a three-times return on ad spend over 28 days. A technology partner also reported that more than 80% of its ad-driven ChatGPT traffic came from new customers.

These are company-reported examples, not universal performance benchmarks. Results will vary significantly by industry, offer, targeting, creative quality, website experience, and conversion tracking.

A New Position in the Customer Journey

The most interesting part of ChatGPT advertising is not the format of the ad. It is the moment in which the ad may appear.

Traditional advertising often interrupts content.

Search advertising responds to a keyword.

Conversational advertising can potentially enter the process while a customer is defining the problem and evaluating possible solutions.

This places ChatGPT close to three important stages of the customer journey:

  1. Discovery: The customer realizes that a product or service may solve a problem.
  2. Consideration: The customer compares different approaches, providers, prices, or features.
  3. Decision: The customer chooses which option to investigate or purchase.

If ChatGPT can connect relevant businesses with customers during these stages without compromising the quality of its answers, it could become a major source of commercial discovery.

Should Businesses Move Their Advertising Budgets Now?

Not necessarily.

A new advertising channel should be tested carefully, not treated as an automatic replacement for platforms that already generate predictable results.

Businesses should begin with a controlled test and compare ChatGPT Ads against their existing channels.

Important performance indicators should include:

  • Cost per click
  • Conversion rate
  • Cost per lead
  • Customer acquisition cost
  • Lead quality
  • Return on advertising spend
  • Percentage of new customers
  • Assisted conversions
  • Customer lifetime value

It is also important to examine what happens after the click. Even highly relevant advertising will not perform well if the landing page is confusing, the offer is weak, the website is slow, or conversion tracking is incomplete.

The platform may be new, but the fundamentals of marketing have not changed.

How Businesses Can Prepare

Companies interested in conversational advertising should begin by understanding how customers describe their problems.

Instead of focusing only on traditional keywords, marketers should study the questions customers ask before making a decision:

  • What are they trying to accomplish?
  • What concerns are stopping them?
  • Which alternatives are they comparing?
  • What information do they need before contacting a company?
  • Which features or benefits matter most?
  • How do they naturally describe the problem?

This information can improve advertising creative, landing pages, product descriptions, FAQs, content strategy, and AI visibility—even before a company launches its first ChatGPT advertising campaign.

Businesses should also make sure that their analytics, Pixel, Conversions API, CRM, and lead-tracking systems are prepared to measure the channel correctly.

The Bigger Marketing Shift

The growth of ChatGPT Ads shows that AI is no longer changing only how marketing is produced.

AI is changing where customers discover brands, how they research products, and where advertising can influence a decision.

Google and Meta will remain essential marketing platforms. However, businesses should no longer assume that every customer journey begins with a search engine or social media feed.

Some purchasing decisions are now beginning inside an AI conversation.

The companies that benefit most will not necessarily be those that spend the most money immediately. They will be the businesses that begin learning early, build accurate measurement systems, understand customer intent, and test the channel without abandoning marketing fundamentals.

ChatGPT Ads are still developing, but the $1 billion milestone sends a clear message:

Conversational AI is becoming part of the advertising market, and marketers should start paying attention.

At KizilCo, we help businesses evaluate emerging marketing channels, build measurable digital strategies, and connect advertising, analytics, automation, and customer experience into one effective system.
