BACKLINK AUDIT

Understand What Is Linking to Your Website

Review your backlink profile, identify potentially problematic link patterns, and build a practical cleanup plan without removing legitimate links that may support your website’s authority.

Service Scope

Backlink Profile Audit & Cleanup is a fixed-scope SEO analysis and cleanup service designed to evaluate external links pointing to one website.

The service covers one primary domain and analysis of its available backlink and referring-domain data.

The objective is to identify suspicious, manipulative, irrelevant, or potentially problematic backlink patterns while separating them from legitimate editorial, business, directory, customer, partner, and industry links.

The service also provides a prioritized cleanup plan and limited implementation support where appropriate.

Backlink Profile Collection

We collect available backlink information from relevant search engine data, client-provided SEO tools, and other approved backlink sources available during the project.

The review may include:

  • Linking domains
  • Individual backlinks
  • Destination URLs
  • Anchor text
  • Link type
  • Linking page context
  • Follow and nofollow attributes
  • Domain patterns
  • Country or language observations
  • Historical link patterns where available

Because different backlink databases discover different portions of the web, no individual tool can be assumed to contain every backlink pointing to a website.

Referring Domain Analysis

We review the domains linking to the website to understand the overall composition of the backlink profile.

The analysis may consider:

  • Relevant industry websites
  • Business directories
  • News and media websites
  • Partner websites
  • Customer references
  • Blogs and publications
  • Foreign-language domains
  • Low-quality directories
  • Automatically generated websites
  • Suspicious domain networks
  • Repeated domain patterns
  • Unrelated websites

The objective is to distinguish normal backlink diversity from patterns that may require additional investigation.

Backlink Quality Review

Backlinks are reviewed based on their context and relationship to the website rather than relying only on automated third-party scores.

The assessment may consider:

  • Relevance of the linking website
  • Relevance of the linking page
  • Link placement
  • Anchor text
  • Website quality
  • Apparent editorial purpose
  • Repeated patterns
  • Commercial relationships
  • Link acquisition signals
  • Destination page
  • Overall backlink context

A low third-party authority score alone does not automatically mean a backlink should be removed.

Suspicious Link Identification

We identify backlink patterns that may warrant closer review.

These may include:

  • Links from obviously unrelated websites
  • Large volumes of repetitive links
  • Manipulative anchor text patterns
  • Paid-link indicators
  • Link exchange patterns
  • Low-quality directory networks
  • Automatically generated pages
  • Sitewide links
  • Spam pages
  • Scraped content
  • Artificial link networks
  • Links created through historical SEO schemes

Potential issues are evaluated in context before cleanup actions are recommended.

Anchor Text Analysis

We review the anchor text used by external websites when linking to the client’s domain.

The analysis may identify:

  • Brand anchors
  • Website URL anchors
  • Generic anchors
  • Commercial keyword anchors
  • Exact-match keyword anchors
  • Partial-match anchors
  • Image links
  • Unusual or irrelevant anchor text
  • Repetitive anchor patterns

The purpose is to identify whether the backlink profile contains unusually concentrated or potentially manipulative anchor text patterns.

Link Pattern Analysis

Backlinks are reviewed collectively to identify patterns that may not be obvious when evaluating links individually.

The analysis may consider:

  • Sudden increases in referring domains
  • Repeated website templates
  • Similar domain naming patterns
  • Large groups of low-quality directories
  • Repeated commercial anchor text
  • Geographic anomalies
  • Language mismatches
  • Sitewide link patterns
  • Links pointing disproportionately to one page
  • Historical link-building footprints

Patterns are evaluated alongside the client’s business history and known marketing activities when that information is available.

Competitor Context Review

Where useful, up to three relevant organic search competitors may be reviewed at a high level to provide context for normal backlink patterns within the client’s industry.

The review may consider:

  • Types of websites linking to competitors
  • Common industry directories
  • Relevant publications
  • Business association links
  • Content-based links
  • General referring-domain patterns

This comparison is used for context and does not constitute a complete competitor backlink acquisition strategy.

Link Classification

Reviewed backlinks or referring domains may be organized into practical categories such as:

  • Legitimate
  • Relevant
  • Neutral
  • Low-value
  • Suspicious
  • Requires manual review
  • Potential removal candidate
  • Potential disavow candidate

Classification is intended to support decision-making rather than automatically treating every weak or unfamiliar backlink as harmful.

Existing Manual Action Review

Where Google Search Console access is provided, we review the Manual Actions section for any link-related action reported for the website.

The review helps determine whether the backlink cleanup is preventative or connected to an existing search engine action.

If an active manual action is identified, the required remediation may be more extensive than a standard backlink audit and may require separate scope.

Link Removal Review

For backlinks identified as appropriate removal candidates, we determine whether direct removal outreach is practical.

The review may include:

  • Finding website contact information
  • Identifying webmaster contact pages
  • Identifying existing account access
  • Reviewing directory removal options
  • Determining whether the client controls the link
  • Prioritizing the most important removal candidates

Not every low-quality backlink requires or justifies removal outreach.

Removal Outreach Preparation

For approved removal candidates, we may prepare a structured outreach list and removal request template.

The deliverable may include:

  • Linking domain
  • Linking URL
  • Client destination URL
  • Reason for review
  • Available contact information
  • Recommended action
  • Outreach status field

Where agreed within the project scope, limited removal requests may be submitted using client-approved communication channels.

Removal ultimately depends on the third-party website owner and cannot be guaranteed.

Client-Controlled Link Cleanup

Where problematic backlinks originate from websites, directory accounts, profiles, or properties the client directly controls, we may recommend or assist with correcting those links.

Actions may include:

  • Removing an unnecessary link
  • Updating an outdated destination
  • Correcting anchor text
  • Removing duplicate listings
  • Updating a directory profile
  • Adding an appropriate link attribute where supported

Implementation depends on the client’s access and the capabilities of the external platform.

Disavow File Review

A Google disavow file is not created automatically for every backlink audit.

We first determine whether the circumstances justify considering the tool based on the backlink profile, available Search Console information, known historical link activity, and the nature of the questionable links.

If disavow is considered appropriate, the review may include:

  • Existing disavow file review
  • URL-level entries
  • Domain-level entries
  • Formatting validation
  • Duplicate entry review
  • Removal of unsupported entries
  • Final candidate review

The purpose is to avoid unnecessarily disavowing legitimate backlinks.

Disavow File Preparation

When justified and specifically approved, we may prepare a Google-compatible disavow file containing selected URLs or domains.

The file is reviewed before submission to reduce the risk of including legitimate links.

Submission is only recommended when the circumstances support using the tool and the client approves the final list.

Google describes the Disavow Links tool as an advanced feature that should be used cautiously because incorrect use can negatively affect search performance.

Disavow Submission Support

Where a disavow file has been determined to be appropriate, we may assist with submission through the applicable Google Search Console property.

The client must approve the final file before submission.

Disavowing a backlink does not physically remove the link from the external website.

The process communicates a request to Google regarding how selected links should be considered in relation to the client’s website.

Link Spam Policy Review

Where suspicious backlink patterns exist, we review them in the context of applicable search engine link spam considerations.

Potential issues may include links associated with:

  • Paid ranking manipulation
  • Excessive link exchanges
  • Automated link creation
  • Low-quality directory schemes
  • Artificial anchor text
  • Large-scale manipulative linking
  • Other link schemes

The objective is to identify patterns that may require corrective action rather than simply labeling every low-quality backlink as harmful.

Backlink Cleanup Prioritization

Recommended actions are organized by priority.

The cleanup plan may separate backlinks into:

  • No action required
  • Monitor
  • Investigate further
  • Correct if client-controlled
  • Request removal
  • Consider disavow
  • Requires specialist review

This gives the client a practical order of operations instead of a large undifferentiated backlink list.

Backlink Opportunity Observations

During the audit, we may also identify legitimate backlink patterns that reveal opportunities for future SEO or digital PR work.

These observations may include:

  • Relevant industry directories
  • Existing partnerships
  • Unlinked business relationships
  • Publications already referencing the company
  • Strong pages attracting links
  • Competitor link categories

This section is informational.

Active backlink acquisition, outreach campaigns, and digital PR are not included in this service.

Final Backlink Review

After approved cleanup actions are completed, we perform a final review of the project findings and completed work.

The review may include:

  • Backlinks analyzed
  • Referring domains reviewed
  • Suspicious patterns identified
  • Removal candidates
  • Client-controlled corrections
  • Outreach status
  • Disavow status when applicable
  • Remaining monitoring recommendations

Because backlink databases and search engines update over time, changes may not appear immediately after cleanup actions are completed.

Deliverables

The completed service includes:

  • Backlink profile audit for one domain
  • Referring domain analysis
  • Backlink quality review
  • Suspicious link identification
  • Anchor text analysis
  • Link pattern analysis
  • High-level review of up to three competitors where useful
  • Backlink classification
  • Google Search Console Manual Actions review when access is available
  • Link removal candidate identification

  • Disavow file preparation when justified and approved

  • Prioritized backlink cleanup plan
  • Backlink opportunity observations
  • Final backlink audit and cleanup report

Client Requirements

The client must provide the primary website domain and information about any known historical backlink or SEO campaigns that may be relevant to the audit.

Where available, access should also be provided to:

  • Google Search Console
  • Bing Webmaster Tools
  • Existing backlink tools
  • Previous SEO reports
  • Existing disavow files
  • Historical link-building records

The client must approve backlink removal outreach and any disavow file before submission.

Scope Boundaries

This service focuses on backlink auditing, risk assessment, cleanup planning, and limited cleanup support.

It does not include guaranteed removal of third-party backlinks, large-scale manual outreach campaigns, backlink acquisition, guest posting, digital PR, ongoing backlink monitoring, manual action recovery campaigns, reconsideration request management, content creation, technical SEO implementation, paid advertising, or third-party software fees.

A backlink appearing suspicious in an SEO tool does not automatically mean it should be removed or disavowed.

Google states that most websites do not need to use the Disavow Links tool; its guidance focuses on situations involving substantial spammy, artificial, or low-quality links combined with a manual action or a likely manual action related to link schemes.

Search engines ultimately determine how backlinks are evaluated and how they affect crawling, ranking, and search visibility.

This service does not guarantee recovery of rankings, removal of a manual action, increases in authority metrics, traffic growth, leads, conversions, or revenue.
