Amazon Ads Pushes Streaming Advertising Toward an AI-Powered Commerce System
Amazon is moving deeper into the convergence of advertising, artificial intelligence, streaming entertainment and ecommerce.
At its 2026 Australian Upfront, Amazon Ads introduced a series of new advertising technologies designed to make streaming campaigns more personalized, interactive and increasingly automated.
The announcements include AI-powered creative personalization for Prime Video, location-specific interactive advertising, new placements between episodes, agentic AI tools for campaign management and expanded integrations across Netflix, Spotify and Australian audio publishers.
Individually, these may look like advertising product updates. Together, however, they point toward a larger shift: advertising platforms are becoming systems capable of deciding not only where an ad should appear, but also how it should look, which message should be delivered and what action a consumer should be encouraged to take.
Prime Video Advertising Gets More Personal
One of Amazon's most significant announcements is Dynamic TV Creative.
The technology combines AI with Amazon's shopping, browsing and streaming signals to personalize components of Interactive Video Ads. Product imagery, headlines, calls to action and product information can be adjusted according to audience behavior rather than requiring advertisers to manually build numerous versions of the same campaign.
Advertisers provide the original creative, while the system handles elements of personalization automatically.
Dynamic TV Creative is expected to become available to eligible Australian brands selling through Amazon in early 2027.
This represents an important evolution in connected television advertising.
Traditional television advertising was largely built around one creative distributed to a broad audience. Digital advertising introduced increasingly precise audience targeting. AI-driven television advertising is now beginning to combine both concepts — large-screen premium media with individualized creative optimization.
One National Campaign, Different Local Messages
Amazon is also introducing Location-Based Interactive Video Ads.
The format allows advertisers to operate a national campaign while changing selected information according to a viewer's geographic location.
A company could, for example, display different regional pricing, promotions or local business information without producing an entirely separate advertising campaign for every market.
Interactive functions including Send to Phone and Sign Up Today can then move the viewer beyond simply watching the advertisement and toward taking an action.
For categories such as automotive, telecommunications, financial services and businesses with multiple locations, this could significantly change how national streaming campaigns are structured.
The Television Screen Is Becoming Part of the Conversion Funnel
Streaming advertising is also moving closer to measurable digital performance marketing.
Amazon's Next Up Ads format will allow advertisers to place brand messaging between consecutive episodes while a viewer continues a streaming session.
Prime Video sponsors are expected to receive initial access when the format enters beta later in 2026.
The broader significance is that connected television is becoming increasingly actionable.
For decades, television advertising was primarily designed to create awareness and influence future purchasing decisions. The connection between seeing a commercial and completing an action could be difficult to measure.
Interactive streaming formats increasingly shorten that distance.
A viewer can encounter an advertisement, request additional information or move the interaction to another device without leaving the broader viewing experience.
Amazon Is Bringing Agentic AI Into Campaign Management
Amazon's AI strategy extends beyond creative production.
Ads Agent combines agentic AI with Amazon's advertising and first-party insights, allowing self-service Amazon DSP advertisers to build, analyze and optimize campaigns using natural-language instructions.
Instead of navigating every campaign-management process manually, an advertiser can increasingly communicate objectives or requests conversationally and allow an AI system to assist with execution.
Amazon has also launched the Amazon Ads MCP Server for Australian advertisers in open beta.
Built around the Model Context Protocol, the system is designed to allow advertisers, agencies and technology partners to connect external AI tools with Amazon's advertising infrastructure for activities such as campaign creation, reporting and account management.
This development could ultimately prove more consequential than any individual advertising format.
The next stage of marketing automation may not simply automate predefined workflows. AI agents could increasingly interact directly with advertising platforms, analyze campaign information and perform marketing tasks on behalf of teams.
Amazon Ads Is Expanding Beyond Amazon
Amazon's advertising strategy is also becoming less dependent on media properties owned directly by Amazon.
Amazon Audiences is being extended to Netflix in Australia, allowing advertisers to apply Amazon's shopping, browsing and streaming signals to audience activation across Netflix inventory.
Amazon DSP is simultaneously expanding its audio capabilities through access to Spotify and major Australian publishers including Southern Cross Austereo, ARN and Nova Entertainment.
This is strategically important.
Amazon is increasingly positioning its advertising business not simply as a way to advertise products on Amazon.com, but as infrastructure capable of connecting audience intelligence, media buying, measurement and commerce across a much broader media ecosystem.
That strategy also makes Amazon Ads increasingly relevant to companies that do not primarily sell products through the Amazon marketplace.
Prime Video's Advertising Audience Continues to Grow
The expansion comes as Amazon reports continued growth in Prime Video's advertising audience in Australia.
According to Amazon Ads, Prime Video's average monthly ad-supported reach in the country has exceeded 5.5 million viewers, representing approximately 10% year-over-year growth.
A larger streaming audience gives Amazon another major environment in which it can combine entertainment consumption with its extensive consumer and commerce data.
But the more important story is how that audience connects with Amazon's wider advertising infrastructure.
Prime Video supplies premium video inventory. Amazon DSP provides campaign buying and management. Amazon Audiences supplies behavioral signals. Interactive formats create pathways toward action. AI increasingly manages personalization and campaign operations.
These components are beginning to function as parts of the same system.
What This Means for Marketers
The industry's transition toward AI-driven advertising will not eliminate the need for marketing strategy or strong creative work.
It may, however, change where human effort is concentrated.
Producing dozens of minor creative variations, manually configuring campaigns and repeatedly analyzing basic performance data are exactly the types of activities advertising platforms are attempting to automate.
That places greater value on the areas AI cannot simply determine from campaign data: positioning, brand identity, creative direction, business objectives, customer understanding and the strategic decisions that tell the technology what it is ultimately trying to accomplish.
The marketer's role may therefore shift from manually controlling every campaign variable toward designing the system in which those variables are optimized.
Amazon's latest advertising announcements offer another indication of where the industry is heading.
Advertising is becoming more personalized.
Media buying is becoming more automated.
Streaming is becoming more interactive.
And AI is moving from helping marketers create campaigns to actively participating in how those campaigns are operated.
The next generation of digital advertising may look less like buying media — and increasingly like managing an intelligent commerce and communication system.
