Google and Shopify Expand AI Checkout in Search and Gemini

Google and Shopify Expand AI Checkout in Search and Gemini

Google and Shopify are pushing ecommerce further into the age of AI, with Shopify confirming that direct checkout is now rolling out to eligible merchants across Google AI Mode and Gemini.

The integration allows shoppers to move from product discovery to purchase without necessarily visiting the merchant’s website. When direct checkout is available, customers can find a Shopify product through Google’s AI experiences, select it, enter shipping and payment information, and complete the transaction through a Shopify-powered checkout.

For ecommerce marketers, the development represents more than another shopping integration. It is another sign that AI platforms are beginning to reshape the traditional path from search to sale.

From Google Search to AI-Powered Checkout

The foundation for the integration was announced on January 11, 2026, when Shopify and Google introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP.

UCP is an open commerce standard designed to give AI agents, merchants and payment systems a common framework for handling different stages of a transaction — from product discovery to checkout and post-purchase experiences.

At the time of the announcement, Shopify said native shopping experiences were coming to Google AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app.

That concept is now moving into merchant deployment.

Shopify currently states that Google AI Mode and Gemini are rolling out to eligible stores through its agentic storefront infrastructure. Direct checkout is also being rolled out to Google users, although availability can still vary by merchant and customer.

How Google and Shopify Direct Checkout Works

Product discovery is powered through Google Merchant Center. Shopify merchants can make their products available through Merchant Center or Shopify’s Google & YouTube sales channel.

For eligible stores with direct checkout enabled, customers can click Buy inside Google AI Mode or Gemini, enter their shipping and payment information, and complete the transaction through a Shopify-powered checkout without visiting the merchant’s online store.

Shopify says direct purchasing is activated by default for eligible stores, although merchants can disable it. If direct checkout is turned off, products can still appear within Google’s AI experiences, but customers are redirected to the retailer’s website to complete their purchase.

For now, direct checkout is focused on the U.S. market. Eligible Shopify merchants must be based in the United States, sell to U.S. customers and maintain a valid Google Merchant Center account.

Why This Matters for Digital Marketing

For years, ecommerce marketing has largely followed a predictable customer journey:

Search → Click → Website → Product Page → Cart → Checkout

AI is beginning to compress that funnel.

A consumer can increasingly discover a product, ask questions, compare alternatives and potentially complete a purchase within the same AI environment.

That changes what online visibility means for ecommerce brands.

Traditional SEO remains important, but ranking a website may no longer be the only path to reaching a customer. Product information also needs to be structured accurately enough for AI-driven systems to identify, understand and present it correctly.

That puts additional importance on accurate product feeds, Google Merchant Center optimization, pricing and inventory data, product descriptions, shipping information, return policies and structured product attributes.

Shopify specifically recommends keeping product information and store policies synchronized with Google Merchant Center so shoppers receive accurate information through Google’s AI experiences.

The Website May No Longer Own the Entire Customer Journey

The larger change is strategic.

Traditionally, search engines acted primarily as gateways. A customer searched for something, clicked a result and continued the buying journey on the merchant’s website.

AI interfaces are increasingly becoming part of the transaction itself.

A shopper may discover a product, ask questions about it, compare alternatives and complete a purchase while remaining inside an AI platform.

The merchant still owns the product, fulfillment and customer relationship, but the interface where discovery and the buying decision happen may increasingly belong to another platform.

That does not make the ecommerce website irrelevant. Websites remain critical for branding, content, customer relationships and many purchasing experiences.

But they may no longer control every stage of every customer journey.

From Search Rankings to AI Recommendations

The Google and Shopify rollout also highlights a broader shift toward AI-driven product discovery.

For ecommerce brands, the question is gradually expanding beyond:

“Can customers find our product in Google?”

It is increasingly becoming:

“Can an AI system understand our product well enough to recommend it?”

That does not replace SEO. It expands the discipline.

Technical SEO, structured commerce data, Merchant Center feeds, brand authority and emerging GEO strategies are increasingly connected.

As AI assistants become more deeply integrated with commerce infrastructure, product data itself becomes part of the marketing infrastructure.

Google and Shopify’s direct checkout rollout is another indication of where ecommerce is heading.

The storefront is no longer limited to the website.

It is increasingly becoming part of the AI conversation.
